Beauty in Motion - Lucia Bourque

BY Kelsey Sheppard

Lucia Bourque is all pastel pinks and purples — from her clothes, her nails and jewelry, to the phone case in her hand. The Peruvian-born Miami native carries herself with the same vibrant energy that defines her artwork: eclectic, fluid, and constantly in motion.

Bourque first arrived in Fayetteville in 2000 after being stationed at Fort Bragg. Working in supply while her then-husband trained as a rigger, she built a life here and became a mother of three. Two of her children are on the autism spectrum, inspiring her advocacy for accessible medical care, safety, and community resources. Her life has also been shaped by hardship; after being struck by a Humvee during her service, she now lives with screws in her back. She uses her experience and knowledge to help others access care.

Despite the challenges, Bourque radiates creativity. Fascinated by water, movement, and mood, she describes her artistic style as “eclectic,” drawing inspiration from everything around her, including this club — the glow of Edison bulbs, the energy of the room, or the rhythm of music. She credits former FTCC art teacher Sean McDaniel as a major influence, laughing as she recalls him teasing her for owning more makeup brushes than paint brushes. (I would argue makeup is art for your face).
