Dear Alice,

My boyfriend took me to meet his parents over Thanksgiving. Everything was fine until I found myself alone in the kitchen with his father. He asked me if I was happy dating his son. When I said yes, he went on to say that the secret to his happy marriage is that he keeps his wife “in line” by putting her over his knee and giving her “a good spanking whenever she needs it.” He suggested I “look into it.” I played it off, but I was horrified. The man needs to see a doctor. My boyfriend thinks the whole thing is funny and that I’m overreacting. Am I?

I’m guessing the man was being facetious. You’re in his home, with his family around. You’re dating his son, who isn’t bothered by what his dad said to you. Unless, of course, he made it obvious that he was trying to put you yourself over his knee. That would be an exit stage left situation.

Lot of women like that kind of thing, though. They are called masochists or practitioners of sadomasochism. This is a form of sexual interest in receiving pain or humiliation for sexual arousal. It’s important to note that for many, these are consensual sexual activities that do not require medical attention. Lighten up, love. Life is short.
