Here’s Hoping Carey James Doesn’t Do Tricks

BY Dr. Brian King

Coming up on Feb 19th, Paddy’s and I will have the honor of hosting Durham comedian Carey James. Last year, Carey was a Top 3 finalist in the NC’s Funniest competition and has opened for comedians Mark Normand, Nick Mullen, and Dave Attell. It will be his first time playing our club and I’m looking forward to working with him. These days, he is a busy guy who tours all over, but was able to grant me a brief interview as a preview. Enjoy!

BK: I hear you were a finalist in NC's Funniest. Do you think you are funnier than me?

CJ: I’m not going to say yes, because I’ve never seen your comedy. But based on your grey hairs, you probably were around for the very first “Knock-Knock Joke.” Which I respect.

BK: Being from Durham, who do you steal all your jokes from?

CJ: I live in Durham, but I’m originally from Sacramento, California. And I steal my jokes from the gentrified areas of Durham.

BK: You've opened for the likes of Dave Attell and Mark Normand, who had hotter groupies?

CJ: Honestly both could use more female groupies in general. Let’s just say their groupies had a lot of beer can & cigarette energy.

BK: Do you mind if I put "opened for Carey James" on my list of credits? What do you think that will do for me?

CJ: Yeah, go ahead! It would be a killer opening joke!

BK: What is a Kendama, and can we expect to see some tricks at Paddy's?

CJ: A Kendama is a Japanese skill toy that I’m obsessed with. If I start bombing, you’ll 1000% see some Kendama tricks. But otherwise, the tricks cost extra. 😉
