Fontaines D.C. – Irish rock at its finest.

BY Daniel Fimbres

Journalist, Jenny Eliscu, may have said it best in an interview with Fontaines D.C. frontman, Grian Chattan “Fontaines D.C. are a band I absofuckenlutely fucken love.” I can relate because when I first heard their music, I was like, "These guys kick ass!" So, who are Fontaine’s D.C.? (D.C. stands for Dublin City, by the way.) They are the “Best Band In The World” according to New Music Express, and I’m inclined to agree.

It's been a while since I found a band to truly get excited about, but Fontaines D.C. came along and captured both my heart and my mind. Their music is powerful and oozes with raw emotion. Their latest album "Romance," has received universal high praise from around the music world. Many critics claim that the band has really grown into themselves as musicians and are currently producing their best work. Do yourself a favor and take a deep dive into their albums and singles; you will not regret it. Exemplary tracks include "Roy's Tune", "Dublin City Sky", "A Hero's Death", Oh Such a Spring", and "Cello Song.”

Margaret Keane was an Irish woman living in Coventry, England, whose fight to have the Irish phrase “In ar gCroithe go deo” (In our hearts forever) on her gravestone inspired the opening track of Fontaines D.C.’s 2022 album, Skinty Fia. The band supported the family’s successful legal battle against the Church of England. "I Love You" is a letter to Ireland's ruling establishment condemning corruption and mismanagement.

This is post-punk at its finest, folks. Fontaines D.C.’s music has inserted itself into the heart of Ireland's culture and politics. It shines a light on a wide range of topics from the country’s past and present.
