Happy Birthday America

I vividly remember being a little kid in Dublin watching American TV shows and dreaming of visiting this country one day – Starsky and Hutch – Kojak – Dallas – The Bionic Man – The A Team – Charlie’s Angels – it’s a long list. I told my mother on more than one occasion that one day I would go to America. She pretended like she didn’t hear me.

American culture crept under the door of every Irish household back then, just as it does today. American friends of mine who visit Ireland are always surprised when they see Judge Judy and Dr. Phil on Irish TV, not to mention Budweiser (and many other American beers) available in Irish pubs, and fast-food joints like McDonald’s and KFC. American culture shapes the world primarily through soft power – exercising global influence through persuasion, economic clout, and the widespread appeal of its media, technology, and consumer brands. This dominance is amplified by a massive domestic market, by far the biggest in the world. Not bad for a country that turns 250 years old this year.

The United States began as an idea, and that idea developed into a bold experiment in 1776. The founders declared that all people have natural rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Over two centuries, the country grew rapidly. It transformed into a diverse, modern powerhouse. Today, American society looks very different than it did 250 years ago. The population is much more diverse. Minorities (like the Irish) and women play a much larger role in the workforce and in higher education. This growth has not been smooth sailing. However, America, on her 250th birthday, should be proud of how far she has come.

American system is in its ability to adapt and change. Every generation takes on the duty to fix broken systems and fight for true equality.

America’s anniversary is not just a time to celebrate past wins. It is a time to look forward. The country's history shows that the future is shaped by the active participation of its people. America is a complex mix of deep divisions and enduring ideals. While the nation grapples with political tension and economic gaps, its core promise of liberty remains a powerful beacon of hope.
