Mau the Mogul - I am not a Jukebox

BY Kelsey Sheppard

Kamau Burbridge came to DJing the long way: through music. The 32-year-old rooted in Charlotte's Westside, is a pianist, choir director, church music director, producer, composer and film scorer. He has written albums for other artists, released his own tapes and built a career around structure, feel, and musical range.

He had wanted to DJ since childhood, but only started learning during COVID, when he finally had the time and money to invest in it. Burbridge recalls his uncle telling him that he wrote music "more like a DJ" - a comment he initially resisted because he was focused on doing everything "correctly." Now, it feels like foresight.

For Burbridge, DJing is not about being a human playlist. "I am not a jukebox," he says. His sets are built around activation - reading the room, making split-second decisions and pushing people toward a feeling. He thrives on crowd participation, whether that means a packed room singing every word or a conga line stretching from the DJ booth to the exit and back again (he said that was a Paddy’s experience he will never forget). Mau’s personality shines through as he plays - trolling the crowd, starting chants, engaging with the staff and guests on the mic.

That exchange has been especially strong at Paddy's, where he says the crowd knows music deeply and challenges him to stay creative. Their energy has pushed him toward riskier mashups and sharper instincts, rewarding the moments when experimentation lands.

Burbridge's influences stretch far beyond the club, from EDM to the Allman Brothers. His uncles, Grammy winners Kofi and Oteil Burbridge, were central in putting instruments in his hands and shaping his understanding of both music and the business.

Deeply embedded in the local arts scene, Burbridge is also quick to credit Charlotte DJs for encouraging him and helping him grow. Whether in a club or, one day, on a stage like Ultra or Tomorrowland, his goal is the same: move people.
