From the Calm – From Production to Performing
BY Elaina J. Martin
If you come to Paddy’s, you’ve likely seen a man in a ball cap darting around finessing the lights and saying a repetitive “Hey” into microphones at soundcheck. That’s Nic Rossi, the Entertainment Manager and Tech Manager of Paddy’s Audio/ Visual crew. He’s often traveling and working to produce media and videos, recording audio, setting lights, and building sets. Rossi is the lead vocalist of the four-member band, From the Calm. Joining him are Nicholas Holliday playing bass, Jaden Miller (son of Joey Miller) on guitar, and Josh Williams banging on the drums.
From the Calm is a rock band that appeals to headbangers with its heavy musicianship and funky flair. Rossi says the group came together two years ago when, after years of assisting others in a production capacity, he decided it was his turn to have fun. The band is energetic and has been playing mostly covers. They hope to release some of their original material as this year progresses. Writing songs is a collaborative endeavor for the band. “Sure, we get on each other’s nerves but we get along,” says Rossi. “We get together and it’s just fun. Why would I want to do anything else?”
Playing at Paddy’s is “scary,” but the guys are up to the task. Rossi says, “It’s up to us to do the best we can to capture the audience’s attention and make them fans and we accept that challenge.” Check out From the Calm live at Paddy’s on February 8th.
