Nor’easter Tippers & Pypes– A Paddy’s Day Special

BY Patrick Gibney
We have a real treat for you on St. Patrick’s Day this year – especially those of you who have watched Boondock Saints 74 times, those who listen to Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphy’s, those who eat corned beef and cabbage once a year, those whose great great great great granddaddy ate potatoes, and those who were circumcised against their will – all distinct qualities of the modern Irish American. This year, we’re bringing in some real Irish traditional entertainment to give you all a little taste of the rich musical history that has come out of the Emerald Isle over the centuries, as the Irish shagged their way into various cultures around the world. On Monday, March 17th, we will be welcoming the very brilliant, Nor’easter Tippers & Pypes, to Paddy’s.
Nor’easter Tippers & Pypes is a Celtic maritime folk music group made up of musicians Sean Nos and Derek Burpee. Sean, who hails from the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York, is a second-generation multi-instrumentalist musician and entertainer. He started on the Concertina at age 10 and slowly added more instruments to his repertoire over the years. Amongst the many instruments Sean plays, he will be highlighting several of them during the Paddy’s Day performance – 6 and 12 string guitars, the Irish bouzouki, the Irish tenor banjo, the button accordion, the highland pipes, the Scottish small pipes, and the Irish low whistle.
Fayetteville’s own, Derek Burpee, originally from Boston, plays bodhran. He is the man behind the Facebook page, International Bodhran Group – a popular bodhran page with members from all over the world. Both Sean and Derek are retired from 20-year careers in the US Army. They have been playing together for over 5 years. Both have extensive musical backgrounds and promise to bring a true taste of the old country to Paddy’s on our biggest day of the year. But that’s not all, they are playing a set of original music at Art Attack on March 12th. Showtime for St. Patrick’s Day is from 3 pm to 6 pm. We are expecting a beautiful day, so Nor’easter Tippers & Pypes will be performing on the extended patio area outside before all the nighttime shenanigans begin. You don’t want to miss this.
