Amy Rester – Glass with Class

BY Elaina J. Martin

All it took was one stained glass class to change the trajectory of Amy Rester’s life. Rester has always been creative. As a kid she did a lot of creative writing and as time went on her creative streak morphed into jewelry making and ornament making. Rester’s aunt worked with stained glass and it seemed like a “mystical talent” to Rester. She found an ad for a beginner’s class in Vass in August of 2021 and decided it was something different she wanted to try. That first class proved that Rester had a knack for working with the medium so the day after that original class, Rester signed up for three more classes. During this time Rester went through a period of crisis and found the classes therapeutic.

Amy Rester peddles her wares at Art Attack on Wednesday nights. She sells sun catchers, small panels, and ornaments. The bulk of her work, though, is custom projects. Her favorite custom project was for a historic home in Chicago where the panel became the backdrop of the wedding. Her work has already gone international. This past winter she created a piece for Paddy’s mother in Ireland that he was able to personally take to his mom.

When asked what three words best describe herself, she replies “loud, funny, and caring.” She has three children, and a husband named John Rester. She and her husband often work on stained glass panel projects together. John does a lot of pattern development and cutting the lead needed for projects.

As Rester looks toward the future of her art, she dreams of having a glasserie. She envisions classes, a retail space for local artists, wholesale distribution of glass, and a maker’s space. The building will have ten spots in which artists can rent to put their supplies and equipment and use that space 24/7. Currently, she is seeking a location on Hay Street or in Haymount.

Lead time for her work is about a week for small orders and 3-4 weeks for larger pieces. For custom projects, Rester can be reached by email at amy@groundtruthoperations.com.
