Dead City Symphony – Keeping Rock Alive
BY Elaina J. Martin
I’ll be honest. When Bill Ayerbe tells me he plays the electric violin I am surprised because I didn’t even know that a violin could be electrified. I enjoy the symphony as well as rock, so it is easy to fall for Dead City Symphony – a cross-genre type of band. The fact that Ayerbe was the Concert Master of the Fayetteville Symphony for over 17 years should tell you a little bit about the quality of the music the group performs.
Dead City Symphony is led by Ayerbe, who offers vocals and the electric violin, and JD Shaw, who also sings and plays guitar. They’ve been bandmates since around 2017. Currently, Ernie Rivas plays bass and Jordan Bell bangs it out on the drums. All the guys are here in Fayetteville except Shaw who lives in Greenville, South Carolina. The band has an ethereal sound—think crunching guitar and prominently the electric violin. “We try to play what people want to hear,” says Ayerbe. To that end, Dead City Symphony plays cover songs including those by Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Tears for Fears, and Simple Minds.
When asked what people should know about Dead City Symphony, I am told that “[They] are pretty damn good.” The musicians are experienced and seasoned pros who deliver a great show. Audience members often say they have never seen anything like the band, particularly one in which the violin is the absolute and predominant feature. Dead City Symphony will play November 30th at Paddy’s. Patrons can expect a loud, energetic, “in your face” show, Ayerbe says – perfect for a Saturday night.
